Common sense

"I would never marry you."
"That's very convenient for you because I don't recall asking you to."
Emma fumed. "I wouldn't marry you if you were the last man on earth!" She paused for a second as she pondered what was clearly an overused cliché.
"Well, maybe if you were the last man on earth but only then!"
Alex decided he loved her obvious common sense.

Far beyond thoughts of romance and passion

Poppy gave her sister a sly glance. "At Amelia's age, women are far beyond thoughts of romance and passion."
"One never knows," Leo told Poppy. "She may catch an elderly gentleman who needs a nurse."

A lot to say about Newton

Kate waited a few moments, then had to ask, "Did the viscount say anything about me?"
"You?"
"No, some other me," Kate practically snapped. "Of course me. How many other people may I correctly refer to as 'me'?"
"No need to get upset about it."
"I'm not upset-"
"But actually, no, he didn't mention you."
Kate suddenly felt upset.
"He had a lot to say about Newton, though."
Kate's lips parted with dismay. It was never flattering to be passed over for a dog.

Nearly impossible

Leo rummaged in his coat for a handkerchief, without success. "Don't cry, darling. I have no handkerchief, and in any case, virginity is nearly impossible to find once you've lost it."

A kiss was not entirely out of order.

And could it even be called a kiss? It had been very, very short. And did it mean anything if the kisser (him) had been feeling terribly grateful to the kissee (her) and possibly even indebted, in the most elemental of ways?
She'd saved his life after all. A kiss was not entirely out of order.
Plus, he had said, "Forgive me." Did it count as a kiss if the kisser had asked for forgiveness?
Honoria thought not.
